One benefit of extra downtime lately has been an abundance of time to read. I haven’t gotten through as many books as I would have liked but thought I would share my recent favorites.
Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid: Reese Witherspoon rarely disappoints with her Sunshine Book Club selections and this one is no exception. It’s the story of a twenty-something black nanny who is stopped late one night, at a grocery store and accused of kidnapping her charge. The misunderstanding sets in motion a chain of events that alter the trajectory of her life. It’s so good you won’t be able to put this one down.
Do You Mind If I Cancel? (Things That Still Annoy Me): I’ve long been obsessed with Gary Janetti’s humor, his Instagram account is laugh out loud funny, so when I saw he was making his literary debut I knew I had to read it. For whatever reason, it took me a year, but boy was it worth the wait. Janetti’s non-linear, short story autobiographical accounts will have you hooked from the first page. I identify so strongly with his unwavering loyalty to soap operas and desire to become a writer while not writing. If your a fan of Gary, you need to read this.
The Blue Bistor by Elin Hilderbrand: Since it doesn’t look like we’ll be taking a vacation anytime soon an imaginary trip to Martha’s Vineyard is the next best thing. I have yet to read a bad Hilderband book and this one is no exception. The story follows a young woman who recently arrives on the island with little money to her name in desperate need of a job, when she serendipitously encounters a handsome restaurant owner on the cusp of the opening weekend of his final season. She’s given the position of assistant manager and the adventure of a lifetime commences.
Our weather here looks pretty yucky for the next few days and I can’t think of a better time to curl up with one of my upcoming selections which are Normal People by Sally Rooney (mainly so I can watch the show by which everyone else is captivated, Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane, and Wild Game, My Mother, Her Lover and Me by Adrienne Brodeur. Also follow me of Goodreads to see what else I’m checking out and my previous reads!
