Book Club : February Part 2

despite the fact that were mere moments from a nor'easter bearing down, february is officially the thing of the past. so here's a roundup of my final monthly book club recommendations.

lilac girls by martha hall kelly: ever since reading anne frank's diary in the fourth grade for a biography assignment, i've been captivated by the strength of the victims in europe during wwii. this story, based in reality, follows three very different women, with three extremely different perspectives. caroline, is an american working and the french consulate when she embarks of a love affair with a perisian actor, just as hitler invades france. kasha is a polish teenager whose world is altered forever when she makes the decision to participate in the underground resistance. and hertz, a german medicinal school graduate who accepts a position a concentration camp, ravensbruck. the lives of the three women intersect in unexpected ways that forever change the futures.

bunny mellon: the life of an american style legend  by meryl gordon: i've previously discussed my love for this biography while i was still in the midst of bunny's life and the culmination was just as incising as the beginning. bunny mellon was a woman who was a witness to over a century of american politics. surrounding herself with some of the most famous names in the world, mellon opted to stay out of the spotlight. a woman of exquisite taste, lived by the motto that "nothing should be noticed", created a style that was uniquely hers. her appreciation for the finer things in life, her extensive art collection alone could rival that of the louve, in conjunction with her love for the simplicity of nature. this was my audio book of the month and while a 17+ hour commitment went a little taxing at times, i'm so grateful that i decided to stick with it.

the light we lost by jill santopolo: this is probably one of my favorite books that i've read in awhile. a reese witherspoon bookclub selection, the story follows lucy and gave from their first meeting at columbia on september 11th, through thirteen years of their romantic ups and downs. told from the perspective of lucy, it tackles the what it means to completely love another and if that love is worth sacrificing ones dreams. i couldn't put it down.
