Crazy for Caftans

If ever there was an article of clothing that could convey a specific kind of lifestyle, it would be a caftan. Synonymous with Palm Springs dry heat and poolside gin martinis, caftans are the epitome of 1960’s chic. Slipping into a belted, billowy gown one is essentially teleported into a Slim Aaron’s photograph, which is why they have become my outfit of choice during house arrest. With their ability to provide amble comfort while maintaining a level of civility and elegance, they’re the perfect addition to any closet.

My grandmother, who is set to celebrate her 100th birthday at the end of this month, has been religiously committed to caftans since their rise to popularity in the era of “vodka neats”, social smoking, and tawny shaded suntans. This is when Christian Dior and Balenciaga modernized the thousand year old trend. The effortlessly chic style was then popularized by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Lee Radziwell, and Princess Grace.

Since there’s no better item to give off the air of sophistication and elegance, while maintaining the comfort level of a nightgown, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite caftans for your next cocktail hour.

I’ll be wearing this until further notice.
