Autumn In New York

"There is a time of year in New York when, even before the first leaf falls, you can feel the seasons click. The air is crisp, summer is gone, and for the night in a long time, you need a blanket on your bed."

Is there anything more cliche than beginning a post with a Sex and the City quote? But, as most lines from the iconic show, it is rooted in reality. This past weekend was that moment. Gone was the humidity and sweltering heat of August, replaced instead by the blissful promise of the perfect days only September can provide. It's impossible to deny that the New York I have called home for the past seven years feels a bit different at the moment which is why I'm grasping on to any of the familiar elements of the city I have always loved. There's a reason so many movies and television shows opt to depict Manhattan in autumn, it's mythic (bouquets of sharpened pencils and romantic images of the like).

However, before we dive head first into fair isle, let’s first say a proper farewell to the summer of 2020.

A era that brought us;
-bottomless pasta dishes as we embraced outdoor dining
-the ruthlessness that accompanied seashell sorting and trading
-catching fireflies amongst the hydrangeas in Southampton
-the nostalgia of a lazy bike ride
-recalling the genius of 90s pop songs
-the accomplishment of a completed puzzle
-the comfort of loved ones
-lack of rhythm for tik tock dances
-chilly Wednesday evening dips in the ocean
-curbside cocktails
-the relief of the shady spots in Gramercy Park while reading
-green chlorine hair
-friendship bracelets
-strength

This year has brought an abundance of pain but at the culmination of a film I recently watched, I was reminded of a quote from Albert Einstein
“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is.”

So as our August freckles begin to fade, and our attention shifts to early morning farmers market bounties,  let us remember to stay alert so as not to miss all the beauty that still exists. We’re one the precipice of so much more.

“It’s official, a new season has begun”.
