Elizabeth Gilbert once wrote of her marriage “Hadn’t I wanted this? I had actively participated in every moment of the creation of this life”. That’s how I feel when I stare into the vast (read: infinitesimal) contents of my closet. I know I purchased every item. I painstakingly deliberated over each article during my Marie Kondo phase, gleefully discarding dozens of bags of “joyless”, subpar garments. And yet I loath about 80% of my wardrobe. How did I get here? And more importantly, how do I get out?
Every season I start a running wishlist, items that are integral to the functionality of my wardrobe. I make a commitment to chipping away at this list, hoping to breathe new life into what I already own. The list, at this moment, is longer than Santa’s and I’ve certainly checked it way more than twice.
I try to focus on functional, timeless pieces that have great versatility (think Veja sneakers, Naadam Cashmere sweaters, and extensive accessories). I always analyze the cost-per-wear of each item, for more pricey items I want it to be classic and of superior quality to allow seasons after seasons of wear. I also look at the type of garment itself, jewelry and jackets get a ton of use as opposed to trendy, statement pieces. For items with a more limited shelf life, I try to cap the amount I spend on them at a tolerable integer.
So I thought I would start a bit of a series on the items I’m eyeing, everything from reasonably priced jewelry, the several styles of boots I’m eyeing, the pajamas everyone needs, and all the jackets I intend on purchasing. It’s partially selfish, so I can keep everything organized and orderly, and partly in an attempt to help anyone struggling with gift ideas for their loved ones this time of year. I guarantee just about every girl in your life would be happy to receive any number of the items cataloged.
